Yes you read that right. I found an article (that I find rather funny) that says, at least green wise, disposables are better than cloth! I have been using disposables, but I'm taking my baby steps into the world of cloth for a number of reasons. My first diapers should arrive this week.
First it says:
The report found that using washable nappies, hailed by councils throughout Britain as a key way of saving the planet, have a higher carbon footprint than their disposable equivalents unless parents adopt an extreme approach to laundering them.
An extreme approach? I wonder how they define that.
To reduce the impact of cloth nappies on climate change parents would have to hang wet nappies out to dry all year round, keep them for years for use on younger children, and make sure the water in their washing machines does not exceed 60C.
Ok, now correct me if I'm wrong since I am new at this but aren't you supposed to hang them to dry? So they last longer? Don't most of us go into cloth diapers intending to use them on later children? And my favorite the washing, I did the math and 60C is 140F. Most people do not have their water that high. In fact I believe that your supposed to set at 120 when you bring a baby home to avoid accidents.
Am I the only one who finds this so-called research laughable?

:-) Good arguments. Though, since we moved to a shady valley and acquired a dryer, I have to admit, I don't line dry anymore. They just weren't drying by the time the sun went down.
But another argument I've heard is that reports like this don't factor in the water used to manufacture the thousands of disposables.
Here's one dispute (it's in the middle of the article): http://www.diaperpin.com/clothdiapers/article_wastewater.asp
I'm sure I could fine more, but I'm tired. :-P
