I got thinking about something my mom has said in the past and it came up again recently. Marriage happens over the kitchen table. The paper just covers the legalities, but the rest just happens.
The definition of marriage is (1): the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law
But what is it truly? It is more than just a contract. It is the merging of two people into a unit. The table is where the big things tend to happen, at least in my family. When we decided to buy a house, it was around the table where we picked out ones to look at, where the serious discussions took place. The big money talks come around the table. Almost all the big things and a lot of the small ones come out around the table.
So maybe my mother is right (shhh. don't tell her). Marriage isn't something that comes with signing a piece of paper, it comes to be over the kitchen table.
What do you think? Is there a place where everything seems to happen?
